One would expect the center of the civilized universe to contain the ultimate places to shop, and you will not be disappointed. You have read about them, seen them in movies, and may have visited one of their local branches in or near your home town. We have selected just a few special places for you, noted for their place in American folklore, as well as their stature amongst the world’s shopping venues. Even if you are not much of a shopper at home, take the time while in New York City to explore the ultimate in shopping experiences.

Toys”R”Us
Even if you have never set foot in a toy store, or when you think of shopping only clothes and handbags come to mind, you must save some time to at least walk inside the newest headquarters of Toys”R”Us. Like a free amusement park in the center of Times Square, this latest winner in the world competition of biggest and best is a humming and buzzing city unto itself, an incarnate mind of the American child where adults are more than welcome to play and explore more sophisticated toys, games and recreational supplies. You will never forget your first experience at this largest toy shop in the world.
1514 Broadway, (800) TOYS-R-US

Barney’s
When Barney Pressman opened his men’s clothing shop in the mid-1920s, his unique level of customer service, where the staff is well-informed about suit making and fitting, where your dog is welcome, and they will even come outside and hail a cab for you, defined a new era in retailing. Barney’s was the first store in New York City to take risks on unknown designers like Armani, still sets the pace in New York’s fashion world, and now markets women’s fashions and unique lines of home furnishings, as well. Also a great place for star-spotting, Jack Nicholson and Mick Jagger are frequent visitors.
Madison Avenue and 61st Street, (212) 826-8900

Macy’s
The 25 blocks between Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s contain the largest, oldest and best known department stores in the world. Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Gimbel’s (now merged with Sak’s Fifth Avenue) are an integral part of American culture. The most famous of Thanksgiving Day parades to usher in the Christmas season is sponsored by Macy’s, “Bloomie’s” has been a household name for decades, and it was Gimbel’s Santa who starred in It’s a Wonderful Life. Be sure to explore this unique corridor of the best department store shopping anywhere.
